Venice in summer: what to do and see

Venice is one of the most fascinating cities in the world. Visit between June and September for an unforgettable experience. The canals glisten in the sun and the typical calli (alleys) and sestieri (districts) are alive with cultural events and ready for a stroll at sunset. Not forgetting the two art festivals, the Biennale and the Film Festival. In summer, Venice also means sea and beaches, aperitifs in the open air and walks or bike rides. Here is a guide to get the best experience in Venice in summer.

Walking round the city in summer

From St. Mark's Square to the quieter districts, such as Cannaregio and Castello, every corner is pure poetry in summer. We recommend you tackle walks when it's not so hot, either early in the morning or late afternoon, when the light is magical and it's less crowded. For a more unusual, exclusive experience, take one of the guided tours for small groups to see the gardens of ancient palaces or vineyards, including the extremely beautiful garden of the Discalced Carmelites.

Enjoy the Biennale of Architecture

In the summer, the Venice Biennale is one of the main attractions. This year is the turn of the Biennale of Architecture. The spaces of the Arsenale and Gardens fill with international halls, contemporary installations and performances.

Beaches for you to discover

The Venice Lido and the island of Pellestrina offer the perfect scenario of beaches with crystal-clear water, villages packed with history, wild nature, traditions and authentic local flavours. The Venice Lido has not only beaches with free access, but also those that are well-equipped and serviced. In September, the Lido also hosts the International Film Festival, one of the most glamorous events of the Venetian summer. From the Alberoni water bus stop at the Lido you can catch the ferry to the island of Pellestrina, with its 12 kilometers of unpolluted beaches, colourful houses, flower gardens, vegetable gardens and genuine cuisine.

The festivals and local celebrations

Venetians are really used to taking part in the traditional local festivals, although many Italian and foreign tourists also come to enjoy them. The festivals create an atmosphere of high spirits: each one has a packed programme of entertainment, with outdoor games, story-telling, theatre, children's activities, cinema, lotteries, religious events and regattas. The festival of San Pietro di Castello and San Francesco della Vigna are especially popular.

Summer events: the Redeemer and Historic Regatta

The lagoon city is at its best in summer and we especially recommend some of the events. The Festival of the Redeemer (third weekend in July) includes a firework display above the lagoon and a festive night amidst decorated boats and floating pontoon bridges. The Historic Regatta (first Sunday in September) is a race between oarsmen in historic costumes along the Canal Grande, preceded by a spectacular procession. There are also big concerts held in St. Mark's Square, a cinema on a boat beneath the stars and art exhibitions in the city's places of culture and exhibition spaces.
