Summer in Venice: the festivals and local celebrations you just can't miss
When summer arrives, Venice also opens the
season of local festivals, or should we say "feste" as they are
called in the lagoon city. Yes, we should! Lots of evenings spent on the
islands and in the various city districts, where you can taste the traditional, local dishes and listen to live
music and have fun altogether. This is really
where you can discover the true heart of Venice and its citizens. Venetians are
really used to taking part in the traditional local festivals, although many Italian
and foreign tourists also come to enjoy them.
The festivals create an atmosphere of high
spirits: each one has a packed programme of entertainment, with outdoor games,
story-telling, theatre, children's activities, cinema, lotteries, religious
events and regattas. The festival of San Pietro di Castello and San Francesco
della Vigna are especially popular.
Venice always has an event or a hidden jewel to
add to your tour programme.
The
festivals are the perfect opportunity to leave behind the best known
itineraries and enjoy a living fresco of this splendid city. Make a note of it
in your diary!
The main summer festivals in Venice

They call it the festival of St. Antony, even though
it is held in San Francesco della Vigna in the Castello district. On offer,
good local food (bigoli in sauce [pasta], fried fish, costicine [ribs] and
sausages...), concerts and dance shows.

This is perhaps the most well-known and well-loved
Festival. It is held in the very beautiful Campo San Pietro overlooking the
Arsenale. Numerous long tables, a packed menu and big concerts are the talking
points.

Pellestrina (29 July – 4 August 2024)

Festival of Portosecco (12 – 18 August 2024)
Again, this is held on Pellestrina. The festival takes
its inspiration from the tales of the elderly and from the celebrations for
Saint Stephen, patron saint of the community. Religious events, concerts,
"Voga alla Veneta" regattas, theatre shows, dances, bingo and the
inevitable fish stall.
